Mahayana Buddhas & Bodhisattvas

A Gallery of Images and Insights by the Students in "Foundations of Buddhism"

ASSIGNMENT

This is a collaborative project.

You should begin setting up your WIKI page as a team.

After that, each team member can add to and edit the Review from home.

1) Choose an image of a buddha or bodhisattva

  • meet your teem at the library to look through art books or surf museum collections and exhibits of Buddhist Art
  • you'll need to post the image, so if it's from a book, scan at low-med resolution

2) Describe the details of the image:

  • who / what does it depict?
  • where it is from? where it is housed now?
  • does it represent a particular period or style?
  • what material is made off? what size is it?
  • describe the posture / gesture(s) / background

3) Analyze the significance:

  • what does the image convey?
  • what do the posture / gesture(s) of the figure mean?
  • is there a story that goes along with this image?
  • what do you think was the original setting for this image?
  • how do you think the image was used?

4) Post Your Review

  • post your review to the Image Gallery
  • reviews should be approximately 500 words
  • follow instructions on Getting Started and find help on What is Wiki
  • if you compose on-line, be sure to press "Save" frequently
  • upload and post one or more photos
  • provide the bibliographic information if it's from a book or the URL if it's from a website
  • sign your entry with the name of your team members

EXAMPLE:

Bodhisattva in Royal Garb - A Chinese Wood Carving of the Bodhisattva Guanyin from the Nelson Gallery

 5) Comment & Revise

  • each student should comment on the work of three others, rating the Review 1 to 5 (5 is the highest)
  • says something you like about the Review and something that could be improved
  • optional: revise your group's WIKI page based on the comments of others
